Author Of Book About Popular Culture In Japan To Speak And Sign Books

Franklin College will welcome E. Taylor Atkins, author of “A History of Popular Culture in Japan,” (2nd edition) to campus on Friday, March 17. He will talk about his most recent book and sign copies at 6 p.m. in the Dietz Center Dining Room, located in the Dietz Center for Professional Development. The event is free and open to the public.

The phenomenon of ‘Cool Japan’ is one of the distinctive features of global popular culture of the millennial age. His most recent book provides the first historical and analytical overview of popular culture in Japan from its origins in the 17th century to the president day, using it to explore broader themes of conflict, power and meaning in Japanese history.

Atkins is a teaching professor of history at Northern Illinois University and author of multiple books including “Primitive Selves: Koreana in the Japanese Colonial Gaze, 1910-1934” (2010), and “Blue Nippon: Authenticating Jazz in Japan” (2001). He is also editor of “Jazz Planet” (2003).
